WATER TREATMENT OPERATOR II

Rockdale County has an immediate opening for a Water Treatment Operator II. Work is performed by skilled and licensed employee in the operation and maintenance of equipment in water treatment/pretreatment plants. Involves the operation of water treatment facilities/equipment to ensure compliance with discharge permits. Included in this work is the inspection and routine preventive maintenance of plant equipment. Work is performed according to specifications received on a particular job and reviewed based on results obtained. Applicants should have knowledge, skills and abilities in:

• Operation and maintenance of equipment, such as: pumps, blowers, motors, bar screens, chemical feed systems, laboratory and other equipment used in water treatment/pretreatment plants
• Collection of samples and monitoring/analyses of lab tests and recording of results
• Operation of air compressors, sludge press and other electrical equipment
• Replacement of chlorine cylinders and regulation of chlorine flow
• Conducting daily meter readings for monthly reports
• Knowledge base to include all federal, state and local safety practices and procedures; water, wastewater and pretreatment principles and practices
• Establishment and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the general public
• Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
• Ability to work flexible hours including on-call and day or night shifts

Candidates should have: high school diploma or GED equivalent, four (4) years experience or training in water, wastewater, pretreatment plant operations; or, any combination of education and experience, valid Georgia driver's license. Must obtain Class II Water and Confined Space Entry licenses within 24 months of hire.

Recruiting rate of pay is $16.01 up to $20.41 per hour, based on qualifications and experience. This announcement will remain in effect until the position is filled. Rockdale County offers an excellent benefits package in a smoke and drug-free workplace.

The incumbent is responsible for monitoring and planning day to day operations for a 2.5 million gallon/65000 lb COD per day activated sludge system Waste Treatment system to meet environmental compliance guidelines while supporting the chemical manufacturing facilities' production schedules.

The incumbent will assure regulatory compliance of all Waste Treatment operations and work closely with the site Environmental Department to measure/monitor this performance. In addition, he/she will complete thorough
documentation related to WT, such as environmental reports, change control
systems, new operating procedures, piping and instrumentation diagrams, process flow diagrams and technical investigation reports of operational issues using root cause analysis and action item tracking. Assure/prioritize preventive maintenance of WT equipment and systems by working with the departmental maintenance coordinator. Other responsibilities include:

(1) working with Project Engineers and Computer Resources to coordinate
start-up of new WT systems and incorporate new systems into routine operating procedures.
(2) developing and maintaining an operational control plan, influent and effluent models and process parameter targets/ranges (metrics) to ensure operational efficiency and environmental compliance
(3) identification/initiation and execution of WT process improvement opportunities.

The incumbent will communicate waste treatment system status and plans/needs
with Utilities Shift Supervisors, Operators and environmental on a daily basis and support continuous improvement of the process and operations through performance metrics.

Qualifications
B.S. in Chemical, Environmental, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or Biology is required. The incumbent must have strong computer knowledge including automation/control systems (eg, PLC), Excel, and Word. Three to five years experience in an activated sludge waste treatment operation required. Experience in a large industrial organic chemical influent activated sludge waste treatment environment is preferred. Additional experience with environmental permits is valuable. Excellent communication, organization, follow-up, and teamwork skills are also required. The successful candidate must achieve a Georgia State Waste Water II license within two years after hire.
