Plant Technician: Gainesville
The City of Gainesville has an opening for a Plant Technician - Salary $25,813- $36,878
Summary of Duties - Operates various types of equipment and performs chemical analysis tests to assure the effluent released back to Lake Lanier is clean and environmentally safe. Changes flow charts daily and records levels in digester , flow and chlorine. Checks influent flow and bar screen, cleans bar screen, drains water traps and checks heat exchanger at digester. May monitor central computers. Reports any backup and assist with clean up. Assures proper working order of and performs preventive maintenance on all moving parts. Operates, calibrates and maintains Dissolved Air Flotation Solids Separators, collect samples, runs certain tests and records levels, sends some samples to the Central lab for analysis. Operates, calibrates and maintains equipment on presses. Collects samples from the lower plant section, performs analyses interprets results and makes any necessary changes. Cleans drying beds, pumps sludge and needed. Assist with operations of the presses as necessary, fills in for absent operators. Performs other related duties are required.
Minimum Qualifications - High School Diploma or GED. Six months experience as a WWRF Trainee or previous experience as a state certified wastewater operator. Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above. Class III Wastewater license. Valid Class C Drivers License and a satisfactory MVR. EOE.

JOB SUMMARY:
WATER: Controls treatment plant machines and equipment to purify and clarify water for human consumption and for industrial use. Operates and controls electric motors, pumps, and valves to regulate flow of raw water into treating plant. Dumps specified amounts of chemicals, such as chlorine, ammonia, and lime into water or adjusts automatic devices that admit specified amounts of chemicals into tanks to disinfect, deodorize, and clarify water. Starts agitator to mix chemicals and allows impurities to settle to bottom of tank. Turns valves to regulate water through filter beds to remove impurities. Pumps purified water into water mains. Monitors panelboard and adjusts controls to regulator flow rates, loss of head pressure and water elevation and distribution of water. Cleans tanks and filter beds, using backwashing (reverse flow of water). Repairs and lubricates machines and equipment, using hand- and power tools. Tests water samples to determine acidity, color, and impurities, using colorimeter, turbidimeter, and conductivity meter. Dumps chemicals such as alum into tanks to coagulate impurities and reduce acidity. Records data, such as residual content of chemicals, water turbidity, and water pressure. May operate portable water-purification plant to supply drinking water. May purify wastewater from plant preparatory to pumping water into rivers and streams or city mains. Performs other duties as assigned and abides by all department safety regulations.
WASTEWATER: Operates sewage treatment, sludge processing, and disposal equipment in wastewater (sewage) treatment plant to control flow and processing of sewage: Monitors control panels and adjusts valves and gates manually or by remote control to regulate flow of sewage. Observes variations in operating conditions and interprets meter and gauge readings, and tests results to determine load requirements. Starts and stops pumps, engines and generators to control flow of raw sewage through filtering, settling, aeration, and sludge digestion processes. Maintains log of operations and records meter and gas readings. Give directions to wastewater treatment plant attendants and sewage disposal workers in performing routine operations and maintenance. May collect sewage samples, using dipper or bottle and conduct laboratory tests, using testing equipment,, such as colorimeter. May operate and maintain power generating equipment to provide steam and electricity for plant. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· High school education or equivalent.
· Must possess a Class II Water or Wastewater Operator license and must show continuing progress toward obtaining the other license within 24 months of hire. Possession of Class II operator licenses for both water and wastewater within 24 months is a condition of continued employment.
· Must possess the tools of their trade.
· Be able to work twelve-hour shifts, and shift work.
· Must have and wear at all times, hard-toed safety shoes which meet ANSI Standard Z-41.
· Must be able to pass a TNAC (Trustworthy National Agency Check) and be able to obtain and maintain access to all areas of Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay.
