General Nature of Work: This position is involved in the operation of the Water Treatment Plant equipment and its facilities on an assigned shift. Work is performed under the supervision of the Water Plant Superintendent and guidance is provided by the Water Plant Operators. The supervisor gives somewhat general instructions, requiring the employee to use much judgement, and reviews the work for compliance with instructions, procedures, and the nature and propriety of the final results. Work frequently requires the employee to refine existing work methods and devlop new techniques. This position is involved in conducting a variety of tests for the safe efficient operation of water plant equipment on assigned shift. Contacts are typically with othger department personnel, and are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, and to provide service. The work involves the use of tools or equipment in the operation of a municipal water plant. Work is performed in an office and outdoors. The Water Plant Operator III may be exposed to hot, cold or inclement weather, dust, dirt, fumes, irritating chemicals, toxic conditions, and machinery and its moving parts.

Qualifications:
(1) Graduation from high school or G.E.D.
(2) The ability to obtain a Class III Treatment Plant Operator's Certificate issued by the State of Georgia, within twelve (12) months of employment.
(3) Ability to meet the insurability requirements of the City of Milledgeville automobile insurance policy.

Conducts inspections of construction projects involving Co. water/sewer infrastructure to ensure compliance w/ applicable codes, standards, & approved construction plans/specifications; conducts end-of-year maintenance inspections on construction sites. Provides information concerning utility construction requirements; responds to complaints & questions related to projects & work activities; researches & investigates cause of problems; recommends solutions to problems. HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR
FOR WATER DISTRIBUTION

The purpose of this classification is to operate track or rubber-tired construction equipment with specialized functions related to maintenance and construction activities where the operation of complex mechanisms requires a higher degree of skill, dexterity, and finesse, and where work is performed to exacting tolerances; equipment in this classification includes tractor-trailer trucks requiring a Class A Commercial Driver’s License. Classification is reserved for those positions where operation of included equipment is the primary function of the job, however employees in this classification perform other construction and maintenance tasks as part of a work crew.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by three (3) years previous experience and / or training that includes construction and maintenance of public utilities, roads, and other infrastructure, with demonstrated proficiency in operation of assigned equipment and assigned service area; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. May be required to possess and maintain a valid State of Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) including appropriate endorsement(s).

WATER PLANT OPERATOR
LEVEL I OR LEVEL II

The purpose of this classification is to operate and maintain water treatment plant systems and related equipment. This level denotes achievement of the Water / Wastewater Plant Operator Level II and Level I certification, with all duties and responsibilities inherent at the operator’s level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational / technical training in water treatment plant operations or wastewater treatment plant operations; previous experience and / or training involving water treatment plant operations, wastewater treatment plant operations, and equipment maintenance is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Class III Water Treatment Plant Operator License or Class III Waste Water Treatment Plant Operator License issued by the State of Georgia.
