WATER/SEWER OPERATOR

JOB SUMMARY

 

This position is responsible for the general maintenance of the water and sewer system.

 

MAJOR DUTIES

 

  • Reads electric or water consumption meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers on a monthly basis.
  • Assist in correcting Inflow & Infiltration problems.
  • Reports complaints or irregularities by consumers to his/her supervisor.
  • Monitors the functions of meters to determine if they are performing accurately.
  • Install new water meters.
  • Pulls lids on manholes for inspections.
  • Clears obstructions, including debris, roots and other blockages.
  • Operates sewer jet.
  • Operates job-related equipment.
  • Operates and maintains assigned vehicle; completes pre-trip inspections; fuels vehicle; cleans vehicle.
  • Maintains log of lift station inspections and readings.
  • Helps repair water and sewer lines.
  • Assist in the installation of water and sewer lines.
  • Assist in the disconnection of water supply when non-payment occurs.
  • Performs daily checks and maintenance on pumping stations and wells.
  • Replaces or repairs outdated or inoperative water meters.
  • Answers trouble calls.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

 

  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design and functions of various equipment and machines.
  • Ability to prepare reports and maintain records.
  • Knowledge of touch read meters and their operation/function.
  • Knowledge of methods, materials, procedures, and standard practices of public works and water/sewer maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tool operation and maintenance practices,
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and rules involved in vehicle and equipment operation; and basic traffic control/barricade procedures.
  • Knowledge of city policies regarding safe work practices.
  • Skill in following written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in operating power equipment and hand tools.
  • Skill in operating assigned motor vehicles and related equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic skills such as adding, subtracting, dividing and multiplying.
  • Ability to perform strenuous manual labor.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water meters and wells.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral instructions.
  • Knowledge of the geography of the City of Metter.
  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of water meters and sewer lift stations.
  • Skill in prioritizing and organizing work.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

 

The Water/Sewer Supervisor assigns work in terms of somewhat general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with instructions and established procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include city and department policies and procedures, supervisory instructions, and safety regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

 

  • The work consists of related duties associated with the maintenance of city water and sewers. Cold or inclement weather and heavy traffic contributes to the complexity of the work.

 

  • The purpose of this position is to read meters and as needed participate in the maintenance of city water and sewers. Successful performance helps ensures the efficient and effective operation of the water and sewer system.

  • Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, property owners, business owners, and members of the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve work related problems, and provide services.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.  The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.
  • The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as goggles or gloves.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
  • Be in good physical condition.
  • Poses a High School diploma or GED.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Georgia issued driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Poses a Class III Georgia State water and/or wastewater Certification or both.
  • Ability to pass a Drug and Alcohol Test.
