Position: Operator

Department: Operations

Reports To: Operations Manager

Salary: Hourly (Eligible for Overtime)

Salary Range:

 

Position Summary: Performs duties related to maintenance of the area’s potable water and/or wastewater treatment and distribution system in accordance with the federal, state, county, municipal and company policies and standards.

 

Position Responsibilities:

  • Operates a company vehicle safely and adheres to company driving procedures
  • Make daily rounds of the systems performing a variety of duties pertaining to water and/or wastewater maintenance and operation.
  • Inspect, record and check water source meters and hydro-pneumatic tank pressure & levels  
  • Monitor chemical supplies and change chemical cylinders/containers as required.
  • Maintain written logs and worksheets of treatment operations, compile equipment readings and test results into summary reports.
  • Test water volume and pressure; collect water samples for chlorine, physical and bacterial tests.
  • Inspect, flush, clean and perform minor repairs of water mains, lines and laterals; make taps for new services.
  • Install, repair and replace fire hydrants, valves, meters, meter vaults and boxes.
  • Inspect, service, and repair components of the water and/or wastewater system including pipes, water storage vessels, chemical treatment equipment, circulation pumps, sewer lift stations, valves and other related components
  • Respond to state and local utility locate request within the mandated 72-hour requirement
  • Respond to service orders in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Post door hangers regarding delinquent accounts, responds to lock-outs, turn-ons and performs re-reads
  • Performs On-Call duties and respond to problems related to the distribution system, wells and waste treatment facilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

 

Materials, Equipment and Tools:

  • Ability to use pump related equipment, electrical equipment, pneumatic equipment, chain saw, shovels, rakes, face shields, gloves and other equipment as needed.
  • Familiar with diagnostic instruments and ability to test, calibrate and repair complex devices and equipment.
  • Ability to work safely around excavators, back hoes or other construction equipment

  • Verify emergency equipment/systems are in good operating condition.
  • Assist in personnel ''on the job'' training programs.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Constant exposure to sun, working in various temperatures and high humidity, exposure to noise and vibration, walking on slippery and hard surfaces and exposure to airborne dust.
  • Must be able to lift heavy objects, sit, stoop, maneuver into tight spaces, use fingers and hands with dexterity suitable for normal activities of this position, possess accurate vision acuity to perform duties, and wear suitable protective clothing or equipment.
  • Ability to read and follow verbal and written instructions is required.

 

Special Requirements:

  • A valid drivers’ license
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • State Water Treatment and/or Wastewater Treatment Class III Certification or Operator Distribution Certification. 
  • Previous outdoor experience such as a construction worker, plumber, meter reader or well drilling is a plus.
  • One year minimum computer experience
  • Ability to perform duties in a responsible manner with minimal supervision
