General Description and Classification Standards

Assists with design, installation, testing, repairs, and calibration of complex electrical, electronic and mechanical equipment such as flow meters, pressure transducers, water quality analyzers, and remote controlling devices including electronic and solid state relays, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and fiber optic transceivers. Duties may include, but are not limited to: maintaining the equipment with the aid of various instruments such as a digital multimeter, oscilloscope, and tone generator; taking corrective action, and creating sketches and records for future reference; assists in the design, assembly, testing and installation of process control panels.

Supervision Received

Works under very general supervision. May work independently or with other skilled or semi-skilled workers with responsibility for completion of assigned tasks.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned.

·         Troubleshoots and repairs in-line process controls, electronic, pneumatic, instrumentation, electrical high and low voltage devices; replaces electronic circuit boards and cards; downloads & uploads programs with the use of a laptop.

·         Installs flow meters, transmitter, indicator, VFDs, PLCs, UV SYS, and calibrates belt scales.

·         Reads, understands and performs minor modifications to existing PLC code; downloads PLC programs to PLC’s and RTU’s; troubleshoots issues with field instrumentation and PLC hardware including CPU, communications, and input/output modules. 

·         Checks, cleans, calibrates and otherwise maintains water quality analyzers in accordance with established job plans; this may involve changing reagents, using primary or secondary standards and changing physical components; documents all cleaning and maintenance activities. 

·         Maintains the process variable measuring, controlling or transmitting type of instruments for flow, volume, level, temperature, pressure, O2, gas, vibrations, etc.

·         Receives work assignments and plans work sequence and resources/materials needed; serves organization as a technical expert; trains and observes crew for proper work, good safety procedures, etc.

·         Maintains a neat and orderly working areas, warehouse, etc.

Makes decisions on technical issues, diagnoses, or procedures following organization guidelines and local, state and federal regulations. Selects from multiple procedures and methods to accomplish tasks. Establishes work methods, timetables, performance standards, etc.

Leadership Provided

Serves as a technical resource or mentor to other employees. Routinely provides work group leadership, guidance, and/or  training to less experienced staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.

·         Knowledge of: standards, practices, methods, materials, tools and measuring instruments used in the electrical, electronic and mechanical fields; of the hazards and safety precautions peculiar to this work; of electrical and electronic theory and practice; of operation and maintenance of water quality analyzers; of computer systems and basic computer operations.

·         Skill in: the use of power and hand tools, and measuring instruments, i.e. multimeter, oscilloscope, tone test meter, simulator, transistor and capacitor checkers.

·         Ability to: diagnose electronic malfunctions and defects and determine parts, adjustments and assists with the repairs necessary for proper operation; to read, understand and apply service manual instructions and electrical schematics; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, internal and external customers.

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

·         High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).

·         4 years’ experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic and related equipment

·         Equivalent combination of education and experience considered on case by case basis

Preferred Education & Experience

·         High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)

·         5-6 years’ experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of electronic and related equipment

·         Equivalent combination of education and experience considered on case by case basis

Licensures and Certifications

‘Certified Controls System Technician’ (CCST) Level 1 ISA Certification required.
