MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:  Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, prefer some experience in plumbing and/or a related field.  Prefer experience with computers, some college or continuing education classes in job or related field, from an accredited college or university. Certification relative to the job responsibilities and duties.  Any combination of education or experience is acceptable.

NATURE OF WORK This is a clerical and technical position responsible for reading water meters and recording findings.  Work also involves installing and repairing meters.

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Reads water meters on assigned route; records findings; maintains records of meters read; reports meters not accessible for reading; determines consistency of meter readings; reports unusual conditions to the Billing Office and their assigned Maintenance Crew Leader; performs special readings as required; assists in read-ons and read-offs for people moving in and out of the system.  Installs new and replacement meters; replaces meter boxes and lids; replaces broken meter heads; landscapes around meters; cleans meters; assists in building water meters; ensures that meters and visible plumbing are correctly installed and functioning properly; reports defects to superior.

Operates hand-held computers for meter reading; uses a variety of hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and shovels.  Changes defective registers; repairs leaking meters on site; picks up and disposes of litter; landscapes around meters.  Assists in weekend duty requirements.  Responds to and participates in emergency calls.  Operates City vehicles in the performance of duties or to attend training programs.  Responds to citizen complaints; discontinues services for delinquent accounts.  Performs other duties as may be assigned.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The following physical abilities are required: crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, kneeling, stooping, and walking.  The work is performed in both indoor conditions and outdoor weather conditions.
