POSITION: WATER PLANT OPERATOR II – UTILITIES – WATER & SEWER
WATER TREATMENT PLANT (Job # 781920)
SALARY: $25.00 (SC, B License) - $28.00 (SC, A License) Per Hour Depending on Licensing and Years of Experience within the license.
NOTE: 12 HOUR SHIFTS (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) 7 DAYS ON AND 7 DAYS OFF)
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent, and supplemented by at least two years’ experience in water plant operation or related work; or the equivalent combination of acceptable knowledge, training and experience may be considered; must possess a state certification from SC LLR as a B level (or higher) water operator.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of the process involved in the pumping and purification of water, including chemical tests and microbiological testing.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices applied to the operation and light maintenance of pumps and similar machinery, including proper methods of lubricating equipment.
- Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment used in the plant.
- Ability to inspect water treatment plant equipment in operation and to detect flaws and abnormalities in operation.
- Ability to efficiently and safely operate all equipment used in water treatment plant operations and make minor repairs.
- Ability to read meters and charts accurately and to maintain routine records of shift operations.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain positive customer-focused relationships with co-workers, supervisors, agencies, the general public, and all other internal and external customers. Personally demonstrates appropriate customer service skills.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
- Responsible for day-to-day operations, including control and maintenance of a 36-million gallons per day (MGD) surface water treatment facility.
- Monitors and operates plant’s SCADA system, controlling pressure and flow of water in the distribution system.
- Analyzes laboratory data and operator logs to achieve maximum water quality at economical costs.
- Calibrates the water monitoring equipment and chemical feed machines and records changes.
- Performs all required chemical and physical laboratory analysis of raw, coagulated, finished and tap water each hour to insure water quality.
- Performs bacteria analysis of raw, finished and river water for total coliform or E.coli content; records results.
- Operates and monitors all pumps at the Filter Plant and both the lake and river raw water intakes and reports any abnormal conditions to the plant’s supervisor.
- Maintains equipment, buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly manner; keeps adequate supply and daily inventory of chemicals used.
- Performs all other duties as may be assigned to meet organizational needs.
