Job Purpose

 

Maintain the areas potable water treatment and distribution system in accordance with federal, state, county, municipal, and company policies and standards.
 

Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Make daily rounds at Water Utility Management water facilities to ensure water purity.  Handle daily water maintenance, operation, and distribution systems, processes, and procedures.
  • Inspect, check, and record water source meters and hydro-pneumatic tank pressure and levels.
  • Inspect, service, and repair components of the water system including pipes, water storage vessels, chemical treatment equipment, circulation pumps, valves, and other related components.
  • Monitor chemical supplies and change chemical cylinders/containers as required.
  • Test water volume and pressure; collect water samples for chorine, physical and bacterial tests.
  • Maintain written logs and worksheets of treatment operations.  Compile equipment readings and test results into summary reports.

  1. Conduct field repairs.
  • Inspect, flush, clean and perform minor repairs of water mains, lines, and laterals.  Make taps for new services.
  • Respond to service orders in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Post door hangers regarding delinquent accounts, responds to lock-outs, turn-ons, and perform re-reads.
  • Perform On-Call duties and respond to problems related to the distribution system, wells, and waste treatment facilities.
  • Locate, mark, and notify water lines per Utilities Protection Center (UPC) within the mandated 72-hour response requirement.
  • Test, calibrate, and repair malfunctioning devices, instruments, and equipment when necessary.
  • Coordinate construction, maintenance, material selection, and repair activities with maintenance, contractors, vendors and other WUM staff.

  1. Conduct field inspections and read water meters.
  • Accurately install and read water meters.
  • Install, repair, and replace fire hydrants, valves, meter vaults, and boxes.

  1. Participate in a variety of special projects such as construction of piping, electrical, and structural systems related to assigned work area.

Qualifications & Experience

 

High school diploma or GED equivalent required plus 1-2 years’ experience in a water treatment processing role or similar experience preferred.  GA State Water Treatment Class III Certification or Operator Distribution Certification required.  This position requires a valid Georgia Class C driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record upon hire. Previous outdoor experience (construction, plumbing, meter reading, etc.) is a plus.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 

Must be dependable, responsible, persistent, energetic, goal-oriented, accurate, team player, flexible, and able to work with minimal supervision.  Must be able to read, follow verbal and written instructions, have good oral and written communication skills with ability to multi-task. Must be reliable with high attention to detail and accuracy.  Must be able to input and manage information and data efficiently and accurately and within set timeframes.  Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Windows Explorer, Word, and Excel a plus.  Experience of or ability to learn meter reading and meter maintenance software (Neptune e900). Must be able to adapt to changing technologies and able to learn functionality of new equipment and systems, including Smartphones and computer systems.  Must have willingness to assist in on-the-job training programs and initiatives.

 

Working Conditions

 

This position works primarily in an outdoor environment.  This position may/will be exposed to the following:

 

  • Water operations duties are performed in all weather conditions including heat, cold, extreme temperatures, and inclement weather.
  • Constant exposure to sun, high humidity, noise, vibration, and slick surfaces.
  • Work environment exposes this position to levels of grease, airborne dust, odor, electrical, mechanical, and toxic hazards.
  • This position will operate heavy equipment and moving machinery including excavators, back hoes, chain saws, generators, shovels, rakes, pneumatic equipment, and other large, loud, and dangerous construction equipment.

 

Physical/Other Requirements

 

This position requires an extreme amount of physical activity. 

  • Must be able lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to sit, stoop, maneuver into tight spaces, use fingers and hands with dexterity, and possess accurate vision to perform essential job duties.
  • There are no inclement weather clauses; this position must work regardless of temperature, hot, cold, rain or snow.
  • This position requires frequent stooping, standing, walking, sitting and twisting. Will often walk on hard surfaces that can be slippery.
  • Must be able to operate a company vehicle and company machinery.
  • Must wear protective clothing when necessary but not limited to face shields, gloves, helmets, masks, etc.
