MUST MEET MINIMUM REQUIREMENT:  Requires High School diploma or equivalent supplemented by one (1) year on-the-job instruction in water/wastewater treatment plant operation; prefer two (2) years of college or technical school study in water treatment plant operation or water chemistry; and One (1) year of work experience in repairing and maintaining water/wastewater treatment equipment and in the operation of a water/wastewater treatment plant; or Equivalent combination of education and experience.  Valid Georgia state driver's license - Class C.  Satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).  Georgia State Certificate as Plant Operator III.

NATURE OF WORK:  This position is a skilled position responsible for the operation and maintenance of the City's water/wastewater treatment plant. Work involves repairing and maintaining water/wastewater treatment equipment, testing water/wastewater samples, and handling chemicals. 

SOME OF THE ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: Operates water/wastewater treatment equipment such as pumps, control panels, chlorinators, fluoridators, chemical feeders, filters, electric motors, spectrophotometers, turbiditers, and conductivity meters in the performance of duties; operates various maintenance equipment such as lawn mowers, backhoes, and tractors. Repairs, cleans and maintains water/wastewater treatment equipment. Replaces chlorine cylinders; regulates the flow of chlorine. Reads meters, gauges, and dials; prepares and maintains logs of readings; adjusts valves and controls to maintain appropriate treatment process; and adds or adjusts addition of chemicals to treatment process as necessary. Collects samples; performs standard physical and chemical tests on water/wastewater samples; analyzes quality of water/wastewater; prepares appropriate forms; and prepares and maintains accurate records/reports of test results. Inspects plant charts on level gauges and flow meters; prepares and maintains logs of plant operations. Maintains plant grounds; performs housekeeping duties; performs plant maintenance duties; reports need for equipment repair; repairs equipment; and performs preventive maintenance on equipment. Assists in training new plant operators. Operates and maintains the City's well system. Cleans weirs, tanks, bar screens, and drying beds; cleans, paints and performs minor repairs to the general physical properties of the plant. Responds to customer complaints. Attends and participates in seminars and classes pertaining to occupation. Responds to and participates in emergency calls as assigned. May operate City vehicles in the performance of duties or to attend training programs. Operates sewer video camera system. Assists in working on special projects.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is very heavy work and requires exerting:  in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally; in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. The work is performed both indoors and outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather conditions. Hazards associated with the operation of power tools and equipment, working around high voltage pumps, and using chlorination equipment are present.  Appropriate safety equipment must be worn at all times.
