SUMMARY:
Assist with repairs, locates, documenting, and exercises various types of valves in the water distribution and sanitary sewer system. Prepares technical field reports to assist the Mapping Group as well as other Department personnel to maintain and verify map records of valve locations in the system. Also, assists in conducting water and sewer surveying, and related record keeping activities.
 
 
JOB DUTIES:
Assist with repairs, locates, documents, and exercises water and sewer valves in the system by conducting:  Field surveys on existing valves, producing detailed valve card drawings, photographing locations, establishing Global Positioning Coordinates, repairing broken valves with mechanical tools, cleaning valves, and using hand and hydraulic tools to exercise valves to insure proper working condition.    
 
Performs a variety of indoor/outdoor tasks using hand-operated power tools and mechanical equipment, repair of sewer air relief valves.
 
Completes valve repair request as needed for assistance within the division.
 
Compiles data generated during field investigation of the water distribution and sanitary sewer system to produce field reports for use by the Engineering Division as well as other Department personnel.
 
Participates and/or assists in water and sewer system surveying projects. Serves as rod-man, turns and reads angles, takes elevation with level, and records measurement and information.
 
Participates and/or assists in operation and maintenance of the division valve exercising machine equipment.
 
Performs field verification of water and sanitary sewer system maps. Generates reports and/or sketches for the mapping group to update Department's utility system maps.
 
Maintains daily logs; prepares working sketches and drawings; may also research construction drawings.
 
Assist construction crews with emergency shut downs of the water and sewer system as needed.
 
Performs all other related duties as required.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:

High school diploma or G. E. D. preferably supplemented by relevant course work in engineering, surveying, and use of personal computers.
 
One year of utility construction, maintenance, surveying or other related experience.
 
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the minimum level of qualification stated above.
 
Licenses and Certifications:
 
Valid Class C driver's license and a satisfactory motor vehicle record.
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
 
Knowledge of construction, maintenance, or operation of water and sanitary sewer systems.
 
Knowledge of surveying techniques and ability to use surveying equipment.
 
Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blue prints, and system maps.
 
Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and occasional night shift.
 
Ability to maintain excellent records of field investigation.
 
Ability to clearly communicate field investigation results to a variety of personnel in the Department both verbally and in writing.
 
Ability to maintain effective working relationship with other employees, consultants, contractors, and general public courteously and tactfully.
 
 
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
This position is classified as safety-sensitive.  Incumbent will be subject to random drug/alcohol testing.

  • Position qualifies for a 5% certification incentive based upon attainment of a Water Distribution License.
     
  • Position qualifies for a 5% certification incentive based upon attainment of a Wastewater Collection License.
     
     Allows maximum of 10% above grade 15.
